In the midst of building my digital senior thesis project, participating in the post-grad career hunt, joining the executive board for Design For America at USC and also completing four courses (because allegedly, I came to USC to get this little thing called an ‘education,’) I’m feeling busy.
BUSY.
How satisfying to drop that loaded little word on my peers! Busy is the perfect excuse for every situation. Don’t feel like grabbing drinks tonight? “I’m sooo sorry, but I’m busy tonight! Have the BEST time!” You’re a pretentious film student too good to enjoy the hot new blockbuster with your tragically cinema-illiterate friends? “Ugh, I wish I wasn’t so busy watching Citizen Kane, the new Fifty Shades looks AMAZE!!” Professor wants to grab coffee and discuss the assignments you turned in late? “Sounds like a blast teach, but you wouldn’t believe how BUSY I am catching up this week!”
Busy implies a loaded schedule, regretful annoyance at the lack of time available to “do it all,” and a smug sense of self-importance. Busy is also a perfect excuse, blocking yourself from achieving to your fullest potential and protecting your ego from possible failure.
Today, I’m calling bullshit on myself.
